Will didn't hear the guard until he was right on top of him, nor sense him he was so engrossed in his chemistry.
"Alright, hands on head," the guard clipped, the hammer of his gun clicking as he aimed it at Will's head.
"You know that's really unsafe," Will muttered, but followed orders, pulling himself to his feet, harness jingling.
"What's that?" the guard snapped, gesturing at the bottles and twists of thermite with the gun.
Will rolled his eyes. "Water, I get dehydrated easily."
"Take it off. Put it on the floor, slowly."
The guard pointed with his gun and there was an explosion as it went off in his hand. Something shattered, spilling chemicals across the floor and Will was moving, shifting mid stride as he hurled himself into the lab. The gun barked again, chipping concrete from the ground and Will darted around a bench before freezing, ears quivering for any sound.
"Hell," the guard swore, and spoke into his radio. "This is Davis, I do not have the subject. Repeat, I do not have the subject."
Will skulked along the ground, cursing his small form. If he'd been a wolf he'd have just bitten the guys legs off, if he'd had a cool power he would have just blasted his head off. Instead he snuck over to to main door which was firmly closed.
Oh come on, Will growled to himself, scowling at the door. Magnetic powers would have been so useful just then.
"Hey!" the guard yelled and Will was off, back between the benches, dodging and weaving from row to row as the guard puffed his way after him. While Will could have kept that up all day it was only a matter of time before more guards came. Will cast his senses outwards and felt the natural gas flowing through the pipes and grinned wickedly.
Out of sight for a moment he shifted back to human, crouched behind a bench he flipped open a gas tap, then another, and another as he ran down the line.
"Hey, stop that!" the guard snapped, and fired a quick shot in Will's direction. Will hurled himself to the floor as the sparks caught the expanding cloud of gas and there was a whomph and a fireball that set off the fire alarm.
Will was up and moving, vaulting over the desks away from the guard as the smoke cleared, opening up another half dozen taps. "See, here's the thing," Will called, as the guard backed away and he shimmied down the row. "You don't fight a water manipulator at a swimming pool, you don't fight a living magent in a scrap yard." He stood up, the guard pointed his gun at Will but didn't dare take the shot, the reek of gas was so heavy in the air.
"And you don't fight a chemist in a lab." Will let his power loose, pushing the gas towards the poor guard and let it ignite in a sudden fireball. The blast whipped at his clothes and their was a single strangled scream from the guard before, silence.
The crunch of Will's footsteps on the broken glassware was the only sound, that and the stuttering flames of the burning gas taps, as he made his way over to the guard's prone form. The man was dead, exceedingly so, burns covering his face which was stretched into a silent scream of terror. Will crouched next to the corpse, he guessed he was supposed to feel something for the dead man, but he didn't. Instead he stole his key card and made a run for it.
